Climate Change is happening now ...

Climate change is a global issue, which is probably already affecting your local authority as well.

2005 became a record hurricane year, the winter 2006/2007 might have been the warmest winter in Europe since the start of weather data registration in 1901.

Some facts from Europe:

  • In 2005, Portugal suffered its worst drought since 1945, with fires having destroyed 300,000 hectares of forests. Many cities and towns (including Coimbra, Portugal's third-largest city) were threatened and dozens of villages had to be evacuated.
  • The drought in Spain in 2005 was the worst the country has ever experienced. As the drought enters its second year, the National Meteorological Institute (NMI) says there are no signs of relief.
  • Heavy rainfalls and floods beleaguered Austria, Germany and Romania.
  • Tornados and rainstorms affected  Cataluña, Valencia, the Baleares, Murcia and Andalucía.
  • In 2006, large regions, especially traditional winter sport ressorts, haven't seen any or only little snow ...

Cities and municipalities need both to adapt to the effects of climate change to protect their citizens and to act now to cut greenhouse gas emissions!
